Entsminger Geneology
A few months before Uncle Charlie (aka, William Fremont Entsminger) died in June 12, 2009, he enlisted my help in a project he had been working on for many years. He wanted to trace our ancestry, and in particular, he wanted to know where his father (my grandfather) was born. The latter seemed a simple task, but it turned out that I needed to trace our entire ancestry before stumbling upon the answer to his question. His father was born in Longdale, VA.
SPECIAL THANKS
We are indebted to the fine research and work of Raymond Martin Bell and Brendan R. Wehrung for their decades of work tracing the Entsminger family. Although their primary interest was in tracing the Pennsylvania 'Ensmingers', their wonderful work in Alsace is responsible for the French/German information we include here. We highly recommend their book (Ensminger of Alsace and Pennsylvania, 1994) for information about other Ensminger clans.
So this study in family history is dedicated to your enthusiasm, Uncle Charlie, for wanting to know our roots. It is one of many things we share.
13 generations, from Hans Meyer der Einssminger (1575-1621) in Lorraine and Alsace, to Fremont McKim Entsminger (1891-1938) in Virginia and Ohio, and Fremont’s descendants in Virginia, Ohio, and Colorado. |
‘Ensming,’ ‘Entsminger,’ ‘Entzminger’ in its variations denotes a former inhabitant of Insming, a village in Moselle, France, near the border with Germany. |
My family, the ancestors of Fremont McKim Entsminger, can be traced directly back to John Henry Ensminger, Sr. who left Alsace, France with his family and arrived in Philadelphia on November 20, 1741. |
John Henry Entsminger, Jr. Left Pennsylvania around 1760 and moved to Virginia. Most if not all of the ‘Entsmingers’ derive from the Virginia clan and are descendents of David Entsminger who was born in Virginia in 1762. The spelling variation, ‘Entsminger’ with a ‘t’ was initiated by John Henry Entsminger, Jr. |
Descendents of Fremont McKim Entsminger My grandfather, Fremont McKim Entsminger, was born in Longdale, VA and met (and married) my grandmother, Lonie Clark in Collierstown, VA. His second marriage to Emma Eaton in Ohio extended the family. |
Libby Floyd Entsminger Ancestry My mother’s family, unlike dad’s, consists of poor records. We can trace one side of the family back to the American Indian heritage in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. |
